Let’s talk about spam.
I get spam comments on my blog just about every day. Yesterday I got four.
They say things like:
Wow this is such a great blog! I’ve been looking forever for information on this subject. By the way, have you heard of Mickey’s Dryer Sheets? I really think they’d help you with that problem!
I see your point, but have you ever thought of reversing the situation? I know someone who could help you talk through that!
Sometimes they are cleverly disguised as possible real comments:
Yes I totally agree! But what about the conclusion? I’m not sure I follow you.
Or there’s the hilariously ungrammatical comments:
I like the blog agree it’s tough out there. my blog [insert portal to viruses here]
The absolute WORST one happened about a week ago:
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
When I saw this my heart fluttered and my fingers flew to open another tab and see the Freshly Pressed posts of the day. Jaw dropped. Heart stopped. Disappointed. I deleted that comment, cursing all spam bots bitterly.
So, while sometimes I am amused by the ill-disguised shespamigans, I’d rather they not keep getting my hopes up every time I look at my dashboard and see that my comment total has increased. While it’s nice that WordPress is pretty good at finding the spam comments and sending them to the spam comment folder, is there a a way to avoid getting them at all? I’d rather not have to look at the spam folder and delete them.
Have you ever gotten a very funny or disappointing spam comment?
[It’ll be pretty ironic if I get spam comments on this post.]
