Today’s question from GReads blog (a totally awesome blog for any book-lovers out there) is:
To-Be-Read’s: How big is your pile? Which book keeps getting pushed down the stack, but you keep meaning to read it?
Funny they should ask… I have several books I’m supposed to read soon. I’ve been given books by friends and I say, “Yes, I’ll read this one after I’m done with the book I’m reading now!” If I were to be more honest, I’d have to say, “Yes, I’ll read this after I’m done with the next 8 books I have on my list!” On Sunday my best friend, Amanda, let me borrow the book we’re reading in book club. On Monday I got a free e-book from Moody Publishers (if you like their Facebook page, you can get one too!). On Tuesday a friend gave me a wonderful book on marriage. On Wednesday morning my prof assigned a book that needs to be read by next Wednesday. Wednesday night my pastor gave Andrew and me a book we should read together. So what did I do on Thursday?
I went to the library, got a library card, and checked out two more books. Maybe I have a problem. On one hand, it’s awesome that I’m getting all this free reading material right now! On the other hand, as fast as my reading rate is, it is not able to keep up with the rate at which I acquire new books.
Am I the only one who has this problem? When I go to Target, I can spend hours in the book section, reading back covers and trying to calculate how I can get my hands on more of these books. Let’s not even talk about Barnes and Noble or any other actual bookstore. Maybe I need to slow it down more. I can’t help but wonder if, since I’m moving on after books so quickly, I’m not truly taking the time to let the book digest. I think about how in undergrad I had to write papers on books when I was done with them, and I remember the details of those books like I know the back of my hand. Now I have to try to think hard about what was in a book I read just a month ago, mentally flip through the details of all the other books I practically inhaled.
So I am hereby putting on pause my habit of acquiring books. I will finish one book at a time and then when I finish a book, I will thoughtfully reflect upon it in this blog. Yay resolutions! So here’s what’s on my reading list and what you can hope to see reviewed here later:
1. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – currently reading for book club
2. The Starfish and the Spider – need to read for class
3. Gods Behaving Badly – from library
4. The Bean Trees – from library
5. God Speaks Your Love Language – free e-book from Moody
6. Love & Respect – book on marriage
7. Sheet Music – book from pastor
Nothing like starting off the day with a great resolution! I should probably go read now…
