Glad Tidings: The First Twenty-Five Years of Flanders Family Christmas Letters by Jennifer Flanders; published 2011 by Prescott Publishing.
Glad Tidings is incredibly unique. When I ordered it from Book Crash, I wasn’t sure what to expect. A collection of Christmas letters? Really?
Yes, these are the last 25 years’ Christmas letters from the Flanders family, and they’ve been published for good reason. The Flanders live in Texas and have twelve children. Mother Jennifer Flanders has faithfully written these Christmas letters filled with joy, humor, and Christmas cheer.
The collection amounts to a sort-of biography of their family after Doug and Jennifer were married. I loved reading about the many mishaps and adventures of their children. At some moments I actually laughed out loud – when their son Ben was bitten by their dog and decided to bite back, and when the entire family accidentally showed up at Six Flags on the same day as hundreds of other male couples! That had to be a sight.
More than anything else, this is an account of a family that loves each other. Again and again, I was astounded by the responsible, intelligent, and compassionate actions of their children. The Flanders have obviously done a wonderful job instilling their children with a sense of God’s love and purpose. Now that I’ve read the book, I have quite a few ideas of ways for me and my husband to do the same for our family. I’ve already spent quite a bit of time on Jennifer’s and Doug’s blogs, as well as the family website, and will continue to do so, I’m sure. I’m only sad that I have to wait until 2036 for the next 25 years of letters. Because I’m the same age as their oldest children, I feel as if I know them, and I’d certainly like to, as I’m sure the entire family is a blessing to everyone they meet. I highly recommend this book and urge you to check out this God-honoring family!
